I recently read an article in "The Cut" about "How to Do 'No-Makeup-Makeup' for Darker Skin tones". The makeup artist in the article Daniel Martin is famed for doing the wedding makeup for Megan Markle.
The make up artist had some good tips in the article - Use two different foundation shades (one for the perimeter of your face and another for the inside) and blend using a blending sponge to merge the two shades together. However, I would amend this slightly to say that a lot of people with darker skin tones are slightly darker around the mouth and the chin and lighter above the nose area (i.e. lighter on the forehead and cheeks)
What I'm surprised about, is some of the brands that he's used. Dior foundation, Laura Mercier Flawless Fusion Ultra Longwear Concealer. These are not brands that have a range of shades for darker skin tones. Dior - well, you know my opinion of them. Same with Laura Mercier. There is a lack of shades for darker skin tones. The fact that he had to blend two shades (3N & 4N) to get the right shade says it all.
The next make up tip that got to me was the berry lipstick shade. I really dislike the berry shade lipsticks and for some reason every MUA at every makeup counter I have ever been to always seems to suggest berry shade lipsticks for my darker skin tone. I absolutely hate it.
My personal No-Makeup-Makeup for Darker Skin tones would go as follows:
Base
- Charlotte Tilbury Wonderglow Primer
- Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder Foundation #9 OR Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter #6
- MAC Mineralize Concealer NW35
- MAC Mineralize Skin Finish in Dark Deep
Eyes
- MAC Saddle OR
- MAC Soft Brown
- Any black liquid eyeliner
Cheeks (any one of the following)
- Charlotte Tilbury Cheek to Chic Blush in Love is The Drug
- NARS Orgasm
- Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge in Powder Pink
Lips (any one of the following)
- Charlotte Tilbury Lipstick - Walk of Shame
- Pat McGrath Lip Fetish Lip Balm in Flesh 3 which is a great Nude Lipstick for dark skin
- Kylie Jenner Velvet Lipstick - I'm Shook
Easy and Pretty Simple out the door makeup for any one with a darker skin tone.
